4 Reasons Why Law Students Should Have Internships
If you are currently in law school or if you are considering a career in law, it is important that you know what it means to become a lawyer and practice the law. Without any practical experience in a firm and office, the “real world” can hit you like a ton of bricks coming straight at you at 100mph. The internship for law students plays a key role in their careers.
And the best way to gain practical experience as well as gain greater insights into the field of law you are studying or interested in? One word: internships.
Here are some key reasons as to why they are important for any aspiring lawyer:
1. Internships offer students greater insight into the particular field of law that they are interested in.
If you do not have any experience in a particular field, would you really want to dedicate all of your time studying for a career you might not like? You do not need to know exactly what you will be doing or where you will be working after you graduate, but having a general idea of the direction you will take is extremely helpful.
2. Internships teach etiquette.
While you can read all about how to act in an office or a courtroom online, actual, in-person experience will always be the best route to take when learning how to act in various situations.
3. Internships are wonderful for networking.
Need we say more? In this day and age, networking is crucial in establishing future success. Not only will networking through your internship help to land you a full-time position after graduation, but each of your contacts can be seen as potential resources that you can tap at a later time for a number of reasons.
4. Internships are the number one way to build your resume.
While resumes do not make or break someone, having an impressive resume that outlines your prior work will put you one step in front of your competition.
Moral of the story? Go out and get yourself an internship!
